The 800 kg goods gate had to be opened and closed by hand for every delivery, in all weathers, and drivers were leaving vehicles to move it. The gate had also started to drift on its stops.
An 800 kg sliding gate opener was fitted with a reinforced rack, safety beams across the opening and an induction loop on the approach. Drivers and the goods office hold remote controls with a 30 m range, and the opener reports obstruction events to the plant office.
The gate is now operated from the cab or the office and the manual handling risk has been removed. Opening takes 12 s and the drive detects an obstruction and reverses without damage.
Test condition: 800 kg gate leaf on a reinforced rack, 500 full open and close cycles, ambient 2 to 30 degrees C. Measured value: 12 s opening time maintained with no measurable backlash on the stops. Benchmark: domestic-grade openers rated for 200 to 400 kg are not specified for this leaf weight and lose their end stops within months.
The leaf weight was the deciding factor. Under-sizing the opener is the most common cause of repeated failure on industrial sliding gates.
