Industry: Higher education
Country / region: United Kingdom (Edinburgh, Scotland)
Model: TS-900 turnstiles with BR-6M barriers and ANPR reader
System scope: Six turnstile lanes at two entrances, two ANPR barrier lanes for permit holders, central card system
About 14,000 students and staff cross the campus entrances each day, and permit-only car parks were being used by non-permit holders during term time.
Turnstiles now control the pedestrian entrances with the existing campus card, and vehicle access to the permit car parks is controlled by ANPR barriers that read the permit database. Access rights are issued and revoked centrally.
Vehicle permit enforcement is automatic, so the car parks serve permit holders only, and pedestrian throughput reached 60 passages a minute without gates being held open.
Test condition: 60 passages a minute sustained across six lanes, 14,000 crossings a day, card reader in continuous use. Measured value: no lane stopped for reader failure and full tailgate detection maintained. Benchmark: single-beam turnstiles lose 10 to 20 % of tailgate attempts and slow to about 30 passages a minute under the same load.
Integrating with the existing campus card removed the need for a second credential, which is what made adoption immediate rather than gradual.
