Industry: Hospitality
Country / region: United Kingdom (Nottingham, East Midlands)
Model: BR-4M-BL boom barrier with 79 GHz radar sensor
System scope: One entry lane, night-time lighting, 79 GHz radar, reception release button
The previous barrier relied on a reflective photocell. Guests reversing after a late check-in and vans turning in the driveway occasionally clipped the arm, and the hotel had paid for two vehicle repairs.
The lane was rebuilt around a 4 m brushless boom barrier with a 79 GHz radar sensor that covers the whole closing arc. The radar recognises a vehicle in the path and reverses the arm in under 0.3 s, and evening lighting was upgraded so guests see the lane on arrival.
There have been no damage claims since installation and the reception button releases the barrier only when the radar confirms the lane is clear.
Test condition: 1.2 t car and 2.2 t van approaching and reversing in a wet lane, 20 km/h, night-time, 300 documented manoeuvres. Measured value: obstruction detected and the boom reversed in under 0.3 s in every manoeuvre. Benchmark: BS EN 12453 permits up to 0.5 s for automatic vehicle barriers, leaving a 40 % safety margin.
Reversing and turning movements are what break barrier arms, and a photocell cannot see a vehicle that has turned away from the beam. Radar covers the arc rather than a line.
