Industry: Logistics and warehousing
Country / region: United Kingdom (Birmingham, West Midlands)
Model: HS-6M-IND industrial high-speed barrier, 100 % duty cycle
System scope: Two HGV lanes with 6 m reinforced arms, 79 GHz radar, guard-booth override
About 280 HGV movements a day crossed two lanes. Wind loading and occasional contact with trailers had bent or broken arms twice in a year, and each replacement stopped a lane for most of a working day.
The site standardised on 6 m industrial barriers with reinforced arms and 79 GHz radar instead of reflective beams. The radar detects a trailer or a car in the closing arc and reverses the arm in under 0.3 s, so contact events are prevented rather than reported.
Both lanes now run continuously through the night shift and no arm has been replaced in the twelve months since installation. Gatehouse staff override the barrier from the booth instead of leaving the desk.
Test condition: 240 openings per hour sustained over an eight-hour shift, 6 m boom, ambient 4 to 28 degrees C. Measured value: no thermal cut-out and no measurable loss of opening speed. Benchmark: a brushed AC barrier in the same duty needs a 30-minute cool-down after roughly 1,500 cycles.
Logistics traffic arrives in bursts, so the barrier has to absorb hundreds of cycles in a short window. The 100 % duty brushless drive and radar safety device address the two failure modes that stopped this site before.
